Kobo Arc 7", 64GB

 In early March of this year [announced that Staples had the 7" Kobo Arc 64GB on sale for $99. It was sold out almost immediately. Then on the thread it was posted that Future Shop and Best Buy had it on sale for $99 too. And, of course, when I looked they were sold out. I was miffed.

Then someone posted that Walmart had it for a dollar less, with free shipping. And, again, when I checked online they too were sold out. I was really miffed.

I kept checking the websites for Staples, Future Shop, Best Buy, and Walmart, and then, on Monday March 17th, Walmart had more stock! So, I bought a white one. Delivery was incredibly fast and I received it Wednesday.

The first thing I did after opening the box was to charge the device. The only items in the box are the device, a charger, and a small user manual, but that is all you need. Charged and turned on, it looks like this;

The specifications of the Kobo Arc 64GB are;
  • 7” 1280 x 800 HD display (215 ppi)
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 1.5 GHz dual core processor
  • Android 4.1™* (Jelly Bean)
  • Tapestries (Kobo’s exclusive and clunky user interface)
  • HD 720p Front facing camera (1.3 MP)
  • Accelerometer
  • Built-in front facing stereo speakers
  • Wi Fi 802.11 b/g/n
  • micro USB connectivity
and of course, 64GB of storage.

In my opinion, Kobo's launcher Tapestry is crap so the first thing I did was drop Nova Launcher on it. Now it feels just like a regular tablet. Nova is one of the best launchers out there.

I then put XBMC on it. XBMC is a free open source media centre. You can't get XBMC through the play store, so you need to browse to http://xbmc.org/download/ on your tablet  and download and install the Android(arm) release.  Your tablet will ask if you want to install software from an un-trusted source. Just say yes.

Next, I wanted to root the Arc. The Kobo Arc is one of the easiest devices  to root.  Simply download arctic.apk to your tablet from http://zhuoweizhang.net/Arctic.apk install it, wait a few seconds [ say 30 to be safe], power the device down then back on. It is now rooted!

If you are leery about downloading and installing random files from the internet, you can install Cydia Impactor. [ http://www.cydiaimpactor.com/ ] Cydia Impactor is a GUI tool for working with Android devices. It has some features, but is still a work-in-progress. Its key feature is exploiting the Android "Master Key" vulnerability, allowing you to obtain root access on your device.

I haven't done this yet, but after rooting install xray app to scan your kobo. http://www.xray.io/

[It's interesting, but seems too complicated for me.]

Anyway, That's it! Now I've just got to get some e-books; up to 71,680!
 [The Kindle has 2 GB internal storage (approximately 1.25 GB available for user content), and holds up to 1,400 books ... so 64 GB would be 71,680 books, or as many as a nice sized library]
